On May 20, John Peter Kirubagaran’s American Board of Directors met in Denver to discuss progress and future needs for the ministry. The three most pressing items on the agenda were:
On August 26, two of UEM’s staff members, who were visiting the Children’s project in Nagaland, were kidnapped at gun point as they were leaving for the train station to return to Bangalore. They were taken into the forest and tied to a tree, where they were found the next morning and released with no harm other than some bruises.
A group of 12 people from the USA led by Rev. Mike Malinsky will be visiting the various projects of UEM during the last week of October and first week of November. These friends will have the joy of seeing first hand what the Lord is doing through UEM and will minister to the poor through Eye and Medical Clinics. I urge you to stand with me in prayer that God would be in control of everything and make this India Mission team’s visit a blessing.
And speaking of the new position of Director, UEM International, I'd like to update you on the status of this leadership post. Nominations have been recently closed after we received eight names, six of whom have asked to be considered. All six are men and women of God, motivated to serve Him on the world missions frontier as a calling and not a job. All have leadership experience in Christian organizations, are active in their churches, and are drawn to serve India. Please pray that the UEMI board will have the Lord’s discernment in selecting the person of His choosing.
There is still much to do in the work of building God’s kingdom in the second-most populous nation on Earth. For those of you who have had the privilege of coming to India to see the ministry work first hand, you don’t need to be told that the need is seemingly insatiable, but the resources are always finite. We are still working on getting not just child sponsorships in place for every child, but also on covering the cost of each child’s schooling. The sponsorship rate only covers their housing, clothing and feeding. The education costs are an equivalent amount, and not every child – not even every sponsored child – has that cost covered. Our CTC training and Taliltha Cumi women sponsorships are also areas of need.
The UEMI Board and I want you to know that effective January 8th, our new Executive Director, Debbie Johnson, began her ministry with us. She will do the work I've been doing for the past 21 years on a volunteer part-time basis, plus a whole lot more. We were blessed with several highly qualified applicants but felt that Debbie had the most relevant experience and understanding of what God is calling us to become. Debbie lives in the Denver area and is married to a local attorney.
