“Their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven” – said the Lord Jesus about little children. The familiar New Testament visual of the Lord taking a child in his arms and receiving him with love is ingrained in the UEMI psyche, for it portrays an attitude of care and concern for children found nowhere else in the ancient world. Children, along with women, old men, and slave, were viewed as physically weak burdens on society who had little value to the wider life of the community. In Greece and Rome , it was an accepted practice to abandon unwanted children along the roadsides to die.
Something similar had begun to take place in contemporary times. In Orissa in India, children were being sold for a bag of rice…some were being used as human sacrifices to appease angry gods…young girls were being hired out to brothels…these are just some of the incidents that were witnessed by UEM Founder Kirubagaran, whose heart broke as he remembered how the Lord loved little children.
From pain often comes passion – UEM’s new project for children was launched with burning determination. Focus group: Orphans, semi- orphans, abandoned, destitute and the street children within the age group of 3 to 8 years.
